The Katavi Region has a size of 47,527 square kilometers and was officially announced on March 1, 2012, by the government’s decision to establish four new Regions which are (Katavi, Njombe, Simiyu, and Geita) to move administrative services and economy for its citizens and was officially launched on 25/11/2012 by Mr. Gharib Bilal, retired Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania.
According to the population and housing census of 2012, the Region has a total population of 564,604, among them 289,817 women and 274,787 men. The average for one household is 6 people and the gender ratio is 98 percent. In addition, the increase in the number of people is 3.2 percent per year. In 2016, the Region is estimated to have a total of 649,837 people, 327,934 women, and 321,903 men. In that number, 297,248 people in the workforce are between the ages of 15 and 64.
The region is between an average of 1000 to 2500 meters above sea level. The temperature is between 130c and 160c in the months of June and July and 260c to 300c in the months of September to November. On average, it receives between 700 mm and 1300 mm of rain between November and April. The region is divided into 4 climate zones, which are the Rukwa lake basin, the Katumba-Inyonga grasslands, the Mwese hills and the shores of Lake Tanganyika.
